Internet security is more important than ever. As technology advances, techniques used by cybercriminals do too. We rely on our computers, phones, tablets and other internet connected gadgets for most things, so keeping those devices and the personal data your store or share on them protected is key.
Thankfully, it’s not particularly difficult or expensive to stay safe online. Here, we round up the best internet security suites that offer all-round protection for your devices against malware, viruses and more.
Otherwise, continue reading for our pick of the best security suites you can buy.
Bitdefender Total Security 2018
Bitdefender is our current top pick. It scores highly in independent tests such as AV-Test, too.
It’s a comprehensive security suite that can protect multiple devices, including Windows computers, Macs, Android and iOS, and you can manage all that via a central web portal.
It’s simple and easy to use, with plenty of genuinely useful features.
In addition to virus and malware protection, Bitdefender also includes double layer defence features to protect against ransomware, as well as other new and emerging threats.
There’s improved protection against snooping hackers such as Webcam Protection, Safe Online Banking a File Shredder and Password Manager.
You can get Bitdefender Total Security for a year for up to five devices for £35/US$55 here.
Norton Security Deluxe 2018
Another strong contender with one of the most famous names in the industry is Norton.
Owned by Symantec, it benefits from cloud support and technology such as SONAR Protection that can detect malware by examining the behaviour of applications as they run.
Like Bitdefender, it manages to be discreet and simple to use, and there’s a Norton Studio App that lets you control all of the devices you’re protecting using the security suite in one place.
You’ll find a password manager included, as well as browser protection and scam insight. The latter uses reputation data to identify potentially harmful sites.
There’s also a disk optimiser, file cleanup and startup manager designed to improve the performance of your computer.
Norton Security Deluxe is available for a year for £69.99, but at time of writing it's a brilliant £29.99 thanks to a discount. In the US it's $97.95 per year at full price, but there are often discounts available there too. You'll find it available to buy on the Norton website here.
ESET Internet Security 11
ESET is a third favourite of ours, offering great value for money with plenty of useful features available. You’ll get the Syninspecter tool that can show you a complete yet manageable rundown of your entire system’s security status, as well as a social media scanner and anti-theft features perfect for laptops.
There are also tools for blocking malicious and phishing websites, blocking spam and protecting you from dodgy emails. Webcam and botnet protection are present, too.
Unknown files can be submitted for analysis if you’re concerned about opening them, and the mobile offering includes SMS and call filtering.
BullGuard Premium Protection 2018
Bullguard’s Premium Protection security suite provides malware detection, a vulnerability scanner and additional features to help secure your PC and your entire home network, with a network scanner that can protect any internet connected device in your home.
Another interesting feature is Bullguard’s identity protection, which searches the web for leaked details such as your name, email address and credit card information. If it finds anything, you’ll be advised about what action to take to rectify the problem.
Parental Control is included, useful for monitoring your children’s use of mobile devices, while the Game Booster can block anything that will slow down your gaming experience, optimising CPU performance to make sure you get the most out of your machine.
One downside is the lack of a dedicated ransomware feature, and the interface is a bit on the technical side so not quite as simple as some of the others listed here.
If you want the whole host of features and the ability to install it on ten devices, you're looking at £69.95/$99.95 per year. There are cheaper options available, but you will miss out on some of its features.
Kaspersky Total Security
Kaspersky’s security suite comes complete with a secure browser to help you prevent websites from tracking you, and the Kaspersky Safe Money utility that prevents keyloggers from intercepting your details.
You can right click files to send them to the cloud for reputation checking before opening them, and the Software Cleaner can scan for unused applications that you can uninstall to maintain the performance of your PC.
Use Trusted Application Mode to prevent dodgy downloads affecting your computer, and there’s a data vault facility designed to protect your files from ransomware. However, there’s not a dedicated anti-ransomware module, which seems a shame considering the current epidemic of such attacks.
McAfee Total Protection 2018
Unlimited installs and a Virus Protection Pledge that promises your money back should the product fail makes the price tag of McAfee Total Protection a good deal.
Features include a vulnerability scanner that downloads the latest versions of your apps, an antivirus scanner, web and email protection, a password manager and an app for Android or iOS.
WebAdvisor scans downloads for malicious payloads and identifies suspicious URLs, while the anti-spam module is designed to keep your inbox free of scams and ads.
File Lock password protects your files against trojans, ransomware and local prying eyes, while the shredder ensures that any file you delete stays deleted.
The home network feature is also hugely valuable, offering the chance to see your entire network and enabling you to see instantly if you have any unauthorised devices using your internet connection.
