CyberPower Ultra HTPC full review

Powered by an AMD FM2 A10 5800K processor, the CyberPower Ultra HTPC is a larger media PC from CyberPower delivers the fastest graphics of any media PC we have reviewed of late.

The CyberPower Ultra HTPC system is housed in a Silverstone SST-GD06B micro-ATX system case, very similar to the Silverstone Grandia GD04 used in the Arbico eXcel A2540 Media Centre. This features a lockable hinged front panel which conceals a pair of USB 3.0 ports, two removable drive caddies and a Pioneer Blu-ray writer within. See also: best media PCs.

The latter BD burner makes it easy to back up your media or add additional drive space without having to delve into the case itself. If you play a lot of Blu-ray discs, the door may become annoying, but the rest of the time it gives the CyberPower Ultra HTPC a tidy, living room-friendlier look.

Inside the CyberPower Ultra HTPC's case is a 120GB Kingston SSD for speed, and 1TB Seagate hard disk for bulk storage. The Compro Dual S800F tuner doesn't support Freeview HD, but can receive terrestrial and satellite broadcasts at the same time and also features a built-in FM radio.

Gigabit ethernet and 802.11n wireless networking are included with the CyberPower Ultra HTPC, along with line in/out S/PDIF and headphone audio connections, and a total of four USB 3.0 ports.

CyberPower Ultra HTPC media PC: benchmarks

In our lab benchmarks, the CyberPower Ultra HTPC performed well, scoring a more-than-adequate 4113 points from PCMark 7. The PCMark Entertainment score also fell a little behind at 3512 points.

However, gaming results from this media PC are by far the best of the bunch. We're obviously not talking hard-core fragging here, but with some tests hitting 66fps you can be sure to get playable frame rates from many popular games if you mind your game quality settings.

The CyberPower Ultra HTPC uses a cooling fan on the CPU, plus additional fans built into the case . These, and the hard disk, result in audible noise from the system that will annoy some users. We're slightly more inclined to forgive CyberPower for this because it is such a powerful media PC, a fact which somewhat justifies all that noise.

The Ultra HTPC comes with a silver Xebec wireless keyboard and touch pad along with a separate media-centre remote so you can use it like a TV or PC depending on your needs.
