Scan 3XS LG155 full review

Scan 3XS LG155

Scan's LG155 is very much intended as mid-level gaming machine, and its combination of Haswell processor and GeForce graphics provide strong gaming performance for less than £1000. See laptop reviews.

Admittedly, it isn't the most elegant of laptops. Its slab-like dark grey chassis measures a chunky 42.7mm thick and weighs in at 2.7Kg. That's heavy for a 15.6-inch model with a built-in DVD drive but Scan tells us that the use of the new Haswell processor meant a full 1Kg could be shaved off the weight of previous Ivy Bridge models, which makes the LG155 look a lot more portable. See all mid-range laptops reviews.

It's well-built too, with a large, comfortable keyboard and touchpad, and attractive high-definition screen with full 1920x1080 resolution. The bright screen has a matt coating to ensure that you're not distracted by reflections, but vertical viewing angles aren't wonderful. The speakers are a real let-down, though, producing a thin, tinny sound and only modest volume. See also Group test: what's the best laptop for under £1,000?

The LG155 is one of Scan's custom machines, so you can configure it to a specification that your budget will allow. The model we reviewed costs £899 and has a quad-core i7-4700MQ running at 2.4GHz (3.4GHz with Turboboost), 8GB of memory, and a hybrid drive that combines a 1TB hard drive with 64GB of solid-state storage.

The combination works well, as the LG155 wakes from sleep in just a couple of seconds and produced a score of 4700 in PCMark 7, which is the sort of score we'd normally associate with a completely solid-state storage system.

Gaming performance is consistently strong too. As well as the processor's integrated HD 4600 graphics, the LG155 also includes a dedicated GeForce GTX 765M graphics card with 2GB of memory. This managed 68fps when running Stalker at 1280x720 resolution with DX11 and medium graphics, and only dipped slightly to 62.2fps when we increased the resolution to 1920x1080, so the LG155 will certainly allow you to enjoy your favourite games with their DX11 eye-candy in full HD resolution.

The cooling fan emits a low hum when running games at full tilt, but it's not loud enough to be obtrusive and the LG155 never became more than mildly warm just around the vent at the back.

Battery life isn't bad either for such a large, powerful machine. Switching to integrated graphics to stream video from the BBC iPlayer gave us exactly four hours of battery life so it will last for about half a day if you need to work away from mains power.
