Medion Akoya P6631 full review
The most striking thing about the Medion Akoya P6631 is the screen – capable of displaying full-HD resolution, the 15.6in screen offers deep, rich colours and sharp definition. When you add a Blu-ray drive into the equation, you’ve got a laptop that is well placed for watching films and high-definition video.
There is one problem, though – the screen is glossy and reflective, as is much of the rest of the Medion Akoya P6631, including the bezel around the screen. This means that you’ll need to be careful about where you place the laptop when using it, or you could end up with glaring reflections.
Provided you can work around this problem the entertainment experience provided by the Medion is good. An nVidia GeForce GT 540M graphics card should keep gamers happy, although we were slightly disappointed by the sound quality provided by the speakers – we found the audio tinny and lacking in the bass department.
We were also slightly underwhelmed by the Medion Akoya P6631’s performance – a WorldBench 6 score of 110 is respectable enough, though some 21 points short of the MSI GE620.
The Medion Akoya P6631 has an Intel Sandy Bridge processor, and even though its Intel Core i5-2410M is clocked at just 2.3GHz, we expected a little more; especially with 8GB of memory onboard. Battery life proved to be adequate in the MobileMark 2007 tests, achieving a score of 278 minutes.
There are plenty of USB ports; four in all, two of which are USB 3.0, but there’s no eSATA. HDMI-out and VGA-out ports are present.
A feature we especially appreciated in the Medion Akoya P6631 was the trackpad – whereas many laptops have ridges around the edge where dirt can build up after use, the Medion’s trackpad is seamlessly built into the palm rest of the laptop, meaning there is nowhere for grime to hide.
However, the glossy finish of the Medion even stretches to the gaps between the keys on the keyboard. You’d be forgiven for thinking this complaint over-fussy, but when the light catches it at the right angle you’ll see a lot of greasy fingerprints between the keys.
