Asus N55SF-S2276V full review

The protractedly named Asus N55SF-S2276V falls very much from the desktop replacement mould. At 2.7kg it’s a little heavy to be carried around routinely.

However, the Asus N55SF-S2276V has plenty to offer where it counts, with a good set of specifications and a reasonable price tag.

To our eyes, the screen is the outstanding feature of the Asus N55SF-S2276V. It has an anti-glare matt finish. You’ll experience none of the annoying dazzle found on glass laptop screens while colours remain deep and rich.

The 15.6in display boasts a high resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. Text and images are sharp as a result, although if we have one grumble it is the polished plastic bezel around the screen, which is still infuriatingly shiny.

The big Asus N55SF-S2276V is clearly an entertainment-focused model. It includes a sound system branded by Bang & Olufsen which provides very good sound quality, even at high volumes.

Graphics are handled by an nVidia GeForce GT 555M processor, which is a real class act – the Asus N55SF-S2276V achieved 106fps (frames per second) in our FEAR tests, a truly fantastic result.

And if watching movies is your thing rather than gaming, you'll be more than satisfied with the inclusion of an optical drive that supports Blu-ray Disc. The laptop is also remarkably quiet in operation, so you don't have to worry about noisy fans spoiling your enjoyment.

Overall application performance was good, scoring 122 points in the WorldBench 6 real-world benchmark test.

However, it isn't all good. We had some reservations about the keyboard, which has been squashed downwards towards the front edge of the chassis to incorporate the speakers.

Though this still leaves enough room for a sizeable and responsive touchpad, a numeric keypad on the right-hand side means that some crucial keys have been made smaller, such as the right Shift key.

The problem this caused was made more acute by the Up Arrow key right next to it, so often when we aimed for the Shift key we moved the cursor up a line instead, which was frustrating.

In terms of connectivity the Asus has just about everything you'll need with VGA and HDMI ports for connecting to external monitors or projectors and four USB ports, two of which support the faster USB 3.0 standard.
