Acer TravelMate P6 full review

We like the simple yet nearly sleek design of the Acer TravelMate P6. It may consist of unimpressive black plastic but the lid is mostly metal with an attractive brushed finish. Read more laptop reviews.

There are some timesaving hot keys for email and Wi-Fi while on the underside is a port for an Acer ProDock.

The Acer TravelMate P6 has an easily luggable weight of just over 1.9kg. The main body of the laptop is reasonably thin at 24.7mm but it's around 46mm at the stern when you consider the battery which deliberately juts out from the back, making the keyboard angled toward you for more comfortable use.

It's a compact laptop but the keyboard is still a decent size with only the Enter key suffering in proportions.

The trackpad performed well with general use, two-finger scrolling and pinch zooming too, but it is a little on the small side. Two physical buttons below it are separated by a fingerprint scanner for businesspeople who want to add another level of security.

This Acer TravelMate P6 laptop is likely to set you back a fair amount from the company reserves. The P633-V-73528G50ikk model supplied to us by Acer UK does not really exist, it seems, but the nearest equivalent we could find costs £849 but doesn’t carry the same high specification with Core i7, 8GB memory and large battery.

Since we haven't tested a model that's actually available to buy, we will have to omit our scores for value and overall score.

Acer TravelMate P6: Build and Features

The Acer TravelMate P6 offers solid build quality with a stiff and durable chassis, although we still found some weak plastic seams.

The Ivy Bridge-generation Intel Core i7-3520M is a dual-core chip but clocked higher at 2.9GHz (3.1GHz with Turbo Boost) than its quad-core counterparts.

Accompanying this is a decent 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM. Windows 7 Professional 64-bit edition comes pre-loaded on the 500GB hard disk.

The Acer TravelMate P6 didn't score quite as highly as the quad-core Ivy Bridge laptops we've seen, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Z580, but it wasn’t too far behind in our WorldBench 6 benchmark, where it scored 145 points.

There's no additional graphics processor so the Acer TravelMate P6 uses the Intel HD Graphics 4000 from the Ivy Bridge chip. The laptop obviously isn't trying to impress gamers but nevertheless it will play action games moderately well if you keep the detail at a moderate level.

Acer TravelMate P6: Performance

In our benchmark tests the Acer TravelMate P6 managed 31fps in FEAR. That’s the highest score we’ve seen from an Intel integrated graphics processor, so we were inspired to run the even trickier Crysis test.

Here we recorded framerates of 77fps (1024x768, DirectX 9, Low detail) and 28fps (same res, DirectX 10, Medium detail).

One of the highlights of the Acer TravelMate P6 is the 13.3in LCD screen. It has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which gives a tighter pixel density than the same resolution on a 15in panel, as is popular with budget consumer laptops.

It can’t match the quality of the 13in MacBook Air, though, which crams in 1440 x 900 pixels into a similar-sized space.

But Acer’s business machine, like most laptops designed for people to actually work on, has a matt anti-glare finish, meaning reflections won’t be the problem that they are with glossy screens.

This screen's weaknesses are low maximum brightness and poor viewing angles. That’s a shame for business users that ever need to show colleagues what’s on-screen.

Ports are a typical array of VGA, HDMI, gigabit ethernet, USB 3.0 times three, headphone-out, mic-in,plus an SD and Sony card reader.

There's also the slightly more rare addition of an ExpressCard 34 slot, and a powered eSATA port which doubles as a USB 2.0 port.

The Acer TravelMate P6, as its middle name suggests, is designed to go with you wherever you venture. Those on the go will appreciate good battery life from a laptop – and Acer doesn't disappoint here.

The Acer TravelMate P6 comes with a large 88Wh battery which lasted an incredible 12 hours and 39 minutes (759 minutes in MobileMark 2007 Productivity).
