Ferrari 3400 full review

The third Ferrari-branded notebook Acer has produced, the 3400 tag is rather deceptive. Although it does have an AMD Mobile Athlon 64 chip, it's actually the 3000+ rather than the 3400+. This is the only real difference between this Acer Ferrari and the last one we looked at, the 3200, which had the Mobile Athlon 64 2800+ but otherwise the pair have a very similar set of specifications.

But the similarity doesn't end there. The performance of the 3400 is a little below what we would have expected, scoring just 80 points in our WorldBench 5 tests. The battery life was equally disappointing - for a reasonably thin and light notebook, you'd want to get more than just over two hours of use.

Like the previous Acer Ferrari, we were impressed with the keyboard, which is slightly curved and very comfortable to use. One design flaw we spotted with the 3200 is still evident on its new sibling - all the USB ports are on the lefthand side. This isn't a massive problem, you might think, but if you try to use the supplied USB mouse with your right hand - and many people do - then you'll find there is only a very limited amount of slack.

Again on a par with its predecessor, there's an 80GB hard drive, 512MB of DDR RAM, a multiformat DVD writer and a 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card. The screen is okay, with a native resolution of 1,400x1,050. It gives a well-defined image, though the colour depth isn't brilliant. Wireless facilities come in the form of a built-in 802.11b/g compatible chip.
