Sennheiser RS 170 full review

You won’t be carrying Sennheiser’s RS 170 headphones around with you when you’re travelling, but they’re an excellent choice when you want to sit at home and wallow in your favourite tunes. Visit Group test: what are the best headphones?

Like AKG, Sennheiser has opted for the Kleer technology to provide lossless CD-quality streaming audio. But while the Kleer transmitter provided with the AKG headphones is small enough to slip into your pocket and carry around with you, Sennheiser’s transmitter is the size of a wireless router and requires a mains power supply.

A non-portable design like that might seem rather pointless for use with an iOS mobile musicplayer. However, there are many who have got rid of their old hi-fi systems and CD players, and now use their iPhone, iPod or iPad as their home music system.

There’s no doubt that the RS 170s are great for use at home. The audio quality is excellent, with a rich, warm tone and firm, punchy bass. It’s superior to any of the Bluetooth headphones in this group, and more than a match for the even more expensive AKG headphones too.

The RS 170s are perfect for using around the home

The large transmitter also has a better range than Bluetooth – up to 80m, compared to 10m for Bluetooth – and we were able to wander freely without the slightest pause in the music playback. The only minor disadvantage is that the headphones require two AAA batteries, rather than having their own internal battery. However, Sennheiser does include a pair of rechargeable batteries with the headphones.

Buying Advice
The stay-at-home transmitter isn’t much good if you’re looking for a portable set of headphones to use with an iPhone or iPod. However, the sound quality provided by the RS 170s makes them one of the best sets of wireless headphones we’ve ever used.
