Evesham Voyager C720 full review

This review appears in the March issue of PC Advisor, available now.

We've only seen two laptops that can match the Evesham Voyager C720 for speed, and not a single one that can outstrip it. With a WorldBench 5 score of 98, the Voyager is a worthy Gold award winner for its performance alone.

A Pentium M 770 processor and 1GB of DDR RAM were largely responsible for the excellent WorldBench rating, but there was one other key component in this outcome: the graphics card.

We've previously seen the Dell Inspiron XPS M170 laptop use the 256MB GeForce Go 7800 GTX card to good effect. But the C720 takes up the challenge from where Dell left off, and squeezes just a few more fps (frames per second) out of the 7800.

On Doom3 the Evesham managed 106.4fps, and it achieved 110.3fps on Halo at a resolution of 1,024x768, beating the Dell by 3fps and 10fps respectively.

The 17in screen is good, with a resolution of 1,440x900, which is slightly surprising given that AJP, whose M575A model is based on exactly the same chassis, opted for 1,920x1,200. This would have pushed the price up, admittedly, but imagine the quality of reproduction the ultra-high-resolution screen and 7800 GTX would have achieved.

That's something Dell's XPS has got over the Evesham, but – by not opting for the higher-resolution screen – the C720's price is £400 less than the Inspiron's, which is a tidy saving. Considering the two laptops are otherwise fairly similarly specified, the deal starts to look better and better. It might not have the stylish design of the Dell, but it isn't exactly ugly or clunky, either.

The software bundle is impressive, and the strong three-year warranty includes a year of onsite cover.
