Iiyama ProLite E2200WS full review
This review appears in the January 2007 issue of PC Advisor, available now in all good newsagents.
The sheer bulk of traditional CRT monitors meant there was always a practical limit on how large they could get. LCD flat-panels have a lot more room to expand. This Iiyama, for example, measures a massive 22in, but it's so light that you can easily transport it from room to room.
More surprisingly, its price tag is similarly lightweight. Indeed, £316 seems almost too cheap – which should serve as a warning that the ProLite is not without its flaws.
At first glance, the signs are good. For such a price, you'd hardly expect Iiyama to be building in every extra under the sun. The styling is not displeasing, but neither is it sufficiently chic to suggest that money has been lavished on the looks. The stand isn’t height-adjustable, and there’s no pivot.
However, the basics are well looked after, with a DVI (digital visual interface) sitting alongside the RGB port. The E2200WS also has onboard speakers, which can save valuable desk-space in an office environment where strong audio quality isn’t a necessity.
Are the specifications weak, then? Well, not on paper. The 1,000:1 contrast ratio is very generous, and hints at considerable depth of colour. The viewing angles are strong, and you get excellent resolution support. The Iiyama supports a massive widescreen resolution of 1,680x1,050 – significantly larger than the 1,280x1,024 you get from a standard 19in flat-panel. The response rate is also fairly good.
However, switch the screen on, and the specifications don't translate into a particularly satisfying viewing experience. Text isn't terribly well focused, especially against grey backgrounds, and image quality is very inconsistent. Colour is fine in the middle of the screen, but noticeably deteriorates as you get closer to the corners, and it's not as vibrant as we'd expect. This is certainly a usable screen, but you can get vastly superior quality elsewhere.
