Syncables Desktop Premium aims to be a cross-platform tool to synchronise your files between Windows and Mac computers

Syncables Desktop is a file synchronisation utility, with the Premium edition majoring on cross-platform support to sync files between Windows, Mac and Linux PCs.

The program allows you to synchronise files and information between two computers, so you could either migrate your important files from an old computer to a new one, or use it on a regular basis to keep your desktop and laptop machines updated with the latest versions of all your files.

There are two versions of the program available - the standard Syncables Desktop costs £18.90 and can be used with two Windows PCs, but we tested the Premium edition, which costs £29.90.

This can be used with Macs and Ubuntu Linux machines as well (though we opted for the Windows/Mac version here). Cross-platform syncing is handy for many households or those still considering a switch to a Mac. Or perhaps for someone using a Linux-based netbook alongside their office Windows PC.

However, we don't really see why it should be more expensive to sync files between a PC and a Mac than between two PCs - especially since the Mac version of the software can't currently sync address books or contact info as the Windows version can (there's an update due to address that apparently, but no firm release date has been given).

The program works the same way, though, regardless of what type of computer you're using. The purchase price includes a two-user license that allows you to install the Syncables Desktop Premium application onto two PCs.

Both computers have to be connected on the same network, and we were pleased to see that Syncables Desktop Premium handled the networking side of things well and automatically connected our Windows PC and Mac without any problems at all.

The Syncables Desktop Premium program works like a fairly straightforward file-browser - albeit one with a slick graphical interface - allowing you to view photos, videos and other files stored on your computer.

You create a ‘syncables library' containing the specific files and folders that you want to sync with the other computer. Once that's done you simply click the ‘Sync Now' button on either computer and your files are automatically transferred across the network from one machine to the other.

However, the Mac software that we tested did display the occasional glitch. As well as its inability to handle contact info it couldn't detect Microsoft's Entourage email program running on our Mac or even Apple's own Mail program.

And, on a couple of occasions, it threw up apparently random error messages - including one that told us it was being blocked by the Windows Firewall.

Additionally, while Firefox bookmarks can be transferred, Syncables admits it cannot yet synchronise Safari bookmarks. And note that Syncables has stopped selling this product in the US and omits any mention of it on its own website, as it transitions over to its newer Syncables 360 product.

While Syncables Desktop could certainly be a useful tool for anyone that wants to regularly sync two Windows PCs together, our testing showed that with the Premium product, the Mac side of things still has some rough edges that need to be ironed out.
