Hanns.G HL249DPB full review

With its 23.6in LED-backlit display, the Hanns-G HL249DPB is the largest of the company's new HL9 range of budget displays. Its slim, minimalist design lends it a rather elegant appearance although it's clearly not a luxury product.

Setting up the Hanns-G HL249DPB display involves attaching the small tilting stand to a simple and obviously plastic circular base by means of a supplied screw.

Alternatively you could make use of the VESA 100 mount at the rear of the Hanns-G HL249DPB, where you'll also find both VGA and DVI inputs and a pair of stereo speakers. See also: Group test: what's the best budget flat-panel display?

The screen comes in a matt anti-glare finish. A row of five tiny buttons sit under the bezel on the right-hand side of the Hanns-G HL249DPB, to quickly adjust brightness and audio volume without having to enter the full menu.

The menu system itself is clearly laid out, simple to use and allows you basic control over colour temperature, picture scaling and dynamic contrast for viewing films. There's also a control for switching between ‘video' or ‘pc' modes, although our review model Hanns-G HL249DPB did not include any HDMI port which would make this option more useful.

If a 24in display is simply too big for you, then you'll be pleased to know that there are four models in the range extending down to 18.5in and starting at £69. All of Hanns-G's displays include a 3-year manufacturer's warranty. A version without the DVI-D port is also available. Visit Group test: What's the best 19 to 24-inch LCD monitor?

Hanns-G HL249DPB: Performance results

Given the low price of the Hanns-G HL249DPB, we were expecting mediocre performance at best – but in fact were very pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's a TN panel with all the inherent limitations of the technology – most notably restrictive viewing angles. However in all other respects this display performed very well indeed.

We measured a checkerboard contrast ratio of 740:1, which is better than many more expensive monitors can achieve. Colour accuracy and uniformity across the surface of the screen was also very good. In our tests, the Hanns-G HL249DPB covered 94% of the SRGB gamut, and 73% of AdobeRGB.

The manual states that “you may find slightly uneven brightness on the screen depending on the desktop pattern you use”.

Our tests did indeed reveal a little reduction in brightness towards the left hand side of the Hanns-G HL249DPB screen when measuring with a calibrator. Although a weak point in this display's performance, it's not really noticeable in day-to-day use and in all other respects, the HL249DPB exceeded our expectations.

In general use, we were very pleased with the output of the Hanns-G HL249DPB and would certainly feel very happy with the results, given the low purchase price.

Power consumption is also exceedingly low for a 24in display. At its maximum brightness, which we measured at 246.9 cd/m2, the monitor consumed only 18W of power. This figure fell to a mere 11W at our standard brightness level of 120 cd/m2.

The Hanns-G HL249DPB is also said to be constructed with a high proportion of eco-friendly materials, so it'll continue to be kinder to the environment when the time comes to recycle it.
