Asus ET2400XVT full review
The £1,277 ET2400XVT is one of the top models in Asus’ all-in-one PC line-up. Its strong specification includes a 23.6in touchscreen, support for 3D Vision (glasses are supplied), four USB 3.0 ports, 6GB of DDR3 RAM, a Blu-ray drive and a 1TB hard disk.
The Asus’ quad-core i7-740QM processor is a member of Intel’s first-generation Core processor family. It supports HyperThreading and Turbo Boost, allowing the 1.73GHz CPU to run at 2.93GHz when the machine is under load. However, it’s significantly slower than the second-generation chips seen in much of the competition, including the only other Core i7 machine here, the Sony Vaio VPC-L22Z1e.
Although this PC supports 3D playback, a separate transmitter is required for it to function. Nevertheless, 3D worked well in our tests; coupled with a powerful nVidia GeForce GTX460M graphics chip, the Asus delivered good framerates. We recorded a playable 40fps in Fear at ‘Maximum’ detail settings.
The 23.6in screen isn’t the most accurate we’ve seen, displaying a slight oversaturation of some colours – particularly with reds. We adjusted the colour profile and the problem largely went away, but none of the other PCs on test required adjustment out of the box.
Asus’ bundled software isn’t as polished as the suite of programs you get from Sony or HP, although it does a good job of helping you to explore the PC’s touchscreen capabilities.
The ET2400XVT’s build quality and appearance is also somewhat lacking when compared to the Apple, Sony and HP all-in-ones. It’s the little extras that make those machines so appealing, such as their direct integration of 3D to the monitor (where applicable); when you’re paying close to £1,300, you simply expect more.
