Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Price

Price is usually a key differentiator when we compare to smartphones but the Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini are exactly the same price.

On a SIM-free basis, you'll have to spend £379 to purchase either. You can, of course, shop around for different contract deals but there are far too many to practically list and compare here. Both are around the £25 per month mark at the time of writing.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Design and build

Despite having the exact same screen size, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is smaller, thinner and lighter than the HTC One mini.

The difference is fairly small on paper but a few millimetres can make a pretty big difference in the hand. The HTC One mini doesn't particularly live up to its name very well – it's only marginally smaller than the flagship HTC One.

What the HTC One mini does have in its favour is the same aluminium design as its bigger brother – it's a class act even if it does have a plastic rim. Unfortunately for the Galaxy S4 mini, it has the same plastic casing as the full-size S4 which we're not half as keen on.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Screen

As we mentioned earlier, the HTC One mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini both have 4.3in screens. However, the former has more impressive credentials with a 720p resolution meaning a pixel density of 341ppi. This is significantly higher than the Galaxy S4 mini's 256ppi from its qHD resolution.

Each phone uses different panel technology so the SuperAMOLED screen on the Galaxy S4 mini is punchy and colourful while the LCD2 display on the HTC One mini has a more natural look. It's up to you to decide which you prefer but the resolution is the big difference here.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Processor and memory

In the engine room, the Galaxy S4 mini has more power than the HTC One mini. Both have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor but Samsung's smartphone is clocked a bit higher at 1.7GHz compared to 1.4GHz.

The Galaxy S4 mini also has 50 percent extra RAM compared to its Taiwanese rival – 1.5GB against 1GB.

As expected, the Galaxy S4 mini won in all our benchmarks. However, from a user perspective, there is little difference between to two.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Storage

Storage is a tricky one because although the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini has half the internal storage than the HTC One mini, it has a microSD card slot which its rival does not. There's clearly much more freedom with the Galaxy S4 mini, for storing files at least, so if 16GB will have to be enough if you choose its rival.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Cameras

HTC has fitted the HTC One mini with the same 4Mp Ultrapixel camera as the HTC One, minus the optical image stabilisation. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S4 mini has an 8Mp rear camera at the rear.

This mean that the HTC will take better low-light conditions but the Samsung will offer more detail when in outdoor sunny situations. Front cameras are similar in rating too.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini: Connectivity

The full-size Galaxy S4 and HTC One both have infrared transmitters for controlling gadgets like your TV. However, in the mini versions, it's only Samsung which keeps this feature. The same is true for NFC which makes the HTC One mini look a little lacking in comparison.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Software

Software is a category where the HTC One min and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini are quite different. Each runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean but with the respective manufacturer's user interface overlay, or skin. It's an area which is largely down to personal taste so here is how they vary.

HTC's Sense 5 is quite minimalist with a focus on design rather than additional features. It's arguably close to stock Android but does have unique add-ons such as BlinkFeed which is an aggregated news and social media feed on the homescreen.

The usual TouchWiz interface is found on the Galaxy S4 mini which is much like the others in the S4 series. It's jam packed with features such as S Health, S Translator, WatchON, S Voice, Group Play, Samsung Hub to name just a few. The question is whether you'll find these useful or not. TouchWiz can seem cluttered and confusing.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini vs HTC One mini review: Battery life

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini has a slightly larger battery capacity to the HTC One mini. However, Samsung's figures don't make as good reading with lower talk time and standby time.

We found battery life very similar with both phones typically lasting a day but not stretching to two. It's worth pointing out now that the Galaxy S4 mini has a removable battery whereas the HTC One mini doesn't.
