HTC Grip: features and specs

Although HTC has been rumoured to launch a smartwatch called the HTC One Wear or 'Petra', its first wearable is a joint effort with Under Armour making it a rival to the likes of Fitbit and Jawbone rather than the LG G Watch RMotorola Moto 360 and other smartwaches.

We've had a quick look at the Grip during our HTC One M9 briefing but weren't allowed to take any photos. However, it has a curved 1.8in PMOLED screen and looks like the Microsoft Band in design. It has a resolution of 32 x 160 pixels.

The HTC Grip has a pedometer to count your steps as well as GPS to track your location (a feature most fitness bands omit). Bluetooth Low Energy is on-board so you can connect it to a smartphone or tablet. It won't just be compatible with HTC devices (like some Samsung gadgets): it will be compatible with Android 4.3 or later and iOS 7 or later.

The 100mAh battery will last around 2.5 days or just five hours with the GPS enabled.

As well as being IP57 dust and water resistant, the band has a light sensor, compass, gyro and g-sensor.

It comes in three sizes:

  • Small: 51.9 x 68.2 x 22.5 mm
  • Medium: 60.98 x 74.57 x 22.5 mm
  • Large: 68.92 x 85.24 x 22.5 mm

The partnership with Under Armour means that you'll be able to analyse the data from the Fitness Band with the Under Amour Record app. HTC says the device will be the 'next level for athletes and sporty consumers'.

Despite a focus on fitness, the display on the Grip will show information including the time and you'll be able to respond to notifications making partly a smartwatch.
