Last year Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S range bringing the 'S' from its smartphone over to the tablet side. We reviewed the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5 with the conclusion they were the firms best ever tablets. So we've been looking forward to finding out what Samsung would bring to the table with the Galaxy Tab S2 and the wait is over.

"The Galaxy Tab S2 is not only our thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever, it also gives users quick, easy access to a wealth of superior viewing and productivity features," said JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile. "We believe the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the most complete personal visual device designed for consumers to carry and use anywhere."

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 release date and price

Rumours suggested that the new Galaxy Tab S2 models would arrive in June and while SamMobile is pretty reliable, that didn't quite happen.

Nevertheless, Samsung has officially announced the tablets and we can now reveal that both Galaxy Tab S2 models will arrive in August. Samsung says 'available in global markets, starting from August' so we'll provide a UK release date as soon as we can.

We're also waiting for UK prices but the Galaxy Tab S2 tablets could well be the same price in pounds as they are in Euros but that would make them more expensive that last year's models. See the full pricing below.

Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 Wi-Fi: €399
Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 LTE: €469
Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 Wi-Fi: €499
Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 LTE: €569

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 specs and features

Not quite as thin as leaked information said, the Galaxy Tab S2 tablets are just 5.6mm thick and weigh 265g (8.0) and 389g (9.7) respectively. That's still impressively svelte though with the previous models at 6.6mm.

The screen size has dropped on both models and so has the resolution, from 2560 x 1600 to 2048 x 1536 but Samsung has stuck with its preferred Super AMOLED technology. The firm says they deliver 94 percent Adobe RGB and other display features include Adaptive Display which automatically adjusts gamma, saturation, and sharpness and Reading Mode which gives you the right brightness.

Making the screens smaller is interesting, especially on the larger model which now matches the iPad Air 2 and Samsung has changed the design from predominantly landscape to portrait, again mirroring its Apple-made rival.

Many of the specs across the two sizes are the same and as such, each Galaxy Tab S2 comes powered by Samsung's own Exynos 5433 processor (four 1.9GHz Cortex A57 cores and four
1.3GHz Cortex A53 cores) and a Mali T760MP6 GPU. That's the same chip as found in the non-Snapdragon Galaxy Note 4 and there's also 3GB of RAM.

Both have an 8Mp rear camera, 2.1Mp front camera, 11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GNSS and optional 4G LTE. You'll be able to buy the Galaxy Tab S2s in either 32- or 64GB storage capacities and the tablets have a Micro-SD cards slot which can take up to 128GB.

Apart from the weight and screen size, the other main difference is the battery which is 4000mAh in the 8in Tab S2 and 5870mAh in the larger 9.7in device. The fingerprint scanner remains but is now touch rather than swipe like the Galaxy S6 phones

Of course, Android 5.0 Lollipop is pre-installed and you'll also get Microsoft Office and 100GB of OneDrive storage free for two years. Software features include Pop-Up Window and Smart Manager which 'displays the device’s settings automatically, including battery power levels, storage and RAM availability for users to efficiently manage their devices'.
