Microsoft Surface 3 UK price: How much does the new Surface 3 cost?

The Surface 3 starts at £419 inc VAT. This entry-level model has 64GB of storage and 2GB of RAM; a version with 128GB of storage costs £499. By comparison, the Surface Pro 3, reviewed, starts at £639.

Versions of both the 64- and 128GB Surface 3s with 4G connectivity will also be available, but pricing has not yet been announced for these.

Surface 3 vs Surface Pro 3: What's the difference?

We've compared the Surface 3 with the Pro 3 in detail. But if you don't have time to read that, here's a brief summary.

Given the £210 difference in price between the entry-level Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3, naturally some compromises to have been made. An obvious difference between the two is the software they run: while both will get a free upgrade to Windows 10 this summer, the Surface 3 runs Windows 8.1 while the Surface Pro 3 features Windows 8.1 Pro. The newer tablet also gets a one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal.

There are some key differences in hardware, too. While the Pro tablet takes a fourth-gen Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 chip, the new Surface 3 features a quad-core Intel Atom. It also has a smaller, lower-resolution screen, 10.8in and 1920x1280 against the Pro's 12in 2160x1440 panel. Unsurprisingly, then, there is also a difference in weight - 622g for the Surface 3 against 800g for the Surface Pro 3.

Surface 3 vs Surface Pro 3: What's the difference?

Both screen and processor have an effect on battery life, with Microsoft promising up to 10 hours for its new tablet, but just nine for the Surface Pro 3. The Surface 3 comes with a 13W power supply that works only with the Surface 3, but it also features a Micro-USB charging port that will work with your phone or tablet charger or a power bank.

Other connections are the same, with both Surface tablets featuring a USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, a microSD card reader, a headset jack and a cover port.

Lastly, the Surface 3's kickstand can be adjusted into just three positions, while the Pro's kickstand can sit at any angle you like.
