Amazon has updated its popular £49 / $49 Fire 7 tablet for 2019. The new model may look the same as the 2017 version, reviewed, but it has more storage, a better selfie camera and three new colours to choose between: Twilight Blue, Plum and Sage.
There’s also a new Kids Edition version which has a new bumper case with a built-in stand for watching videos hands-free.
When is the 2019 Fire 7 release date?
- 6 June 2019
You can pre-order the new Fire 7 today from Amazon, but it officially goes on sale on 6 June.
You’ll also be able to buy the Fire 7 from Argos, Dixons, John Lewis, Tesco, very.co.uk and littlewoods.co.uk where it will also be £49.99.
Cases come in Black, Sage, Plum, Twilight Blue and Desert Orange and cost half as much as the tablet itself at £24.99 / $24.99 each.
The Kids Edition costs £99.99 / $99.99 as before and is also available to pre-order today from Amazon.
What are the new features?
- Twice as much storage
- Better front camera
- New colours
Just as there were only minor differences between the original and 2017 model in terms of hardware, the same is true of the 2019 update.
The “all-new” Fire 7 is basically the same as before, but offers 16- or 32GB of storage rather than 8- or 16GB.
There’s still a microSD slot for expanding storage and it now supports up to 512GB cards, rather than 256GB before.
Amazon also says the processor is faster, but it’s still a 1.3GHz quad-core chip, just as the 2017 model had. Oddly, battery life is claimed to be up to 7 hours, whereas the 2017 model offered up to 8.
No change in the screen: that’s still a 7in IPS display and the bezels are just as thick as before. Importantly, though, Amazon has finally upgraded the front camera so kids can take better selfies and 720p videos, while friends and family will benefit from the improved quality on video calls.
Software wise, there’s no notable differences. You get the same great set of features as before including hands-free Alexa. And because this is Amazon, there’s easy access to its music and video streaming services, plus its online store for physical products.
As ever, don’t mistake this for an Android tablet. There’s no Google Play store, nor any Google apps beyond YouTube. There’s plenty of choice in Amazon’s own Appstore, but it’s not as broad as Google’s.
Kids Edition 2019
The new Kids Edition tablets gets the same 2Mp selfie camera, but storage remains fixed at 16GB just as with the previous 7-inch Kids Edition. But you can still add a microSD card up to 512GB for extra space.
The bumper case comes in pink, blue and purple, but all the other Kids Edition benefits remain the same as before
- 2 year warranty that covers accidental damage
- 1 year of Fire for Kids included – books, apps, games and videos
