2019 is over so we’re looking forward to all the best flagship phones for 2020 and OnePlus has confirmed it will push its Fluid Display technology to 120Hz. This will almost certainly be part of the upcoming OnePlus 8.
The increasingly popular phone maker doesn’t hold information back for launch events so, a lot like LG, has started drip feeding information about upcoming devices. OnePlus hasn’t said when it will arrive but the OnePlus 8 - possibly in May - is a good bet.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has announced that it will offer a 120Hz refresh rate this year, which is 33% faster than the 90Hz screen available on the OnePlus 7 Pro, 7T and 7T Pro. The touch sampling rate has also been improved to 240Hz to make things even more responsive.
“We believe that the smoothest smartphone display must also be able to deliver a superior visual quality and viewing comfort. We’re sure that OnePlus's new 120Hz Fluid Display will be the best you’ll lay eyes on in 2020,” said Lau.
The next-generation Fluid Display has achieved a record-breaking A+ Top Tier Display Rating from DisplayMate.
OnePlus has again partnered with Samsung Display to create the display which is AMOLED and uses the latest OLED (organic light-emitting diode). It will have a peak brightness of over 1000 nits and a longer lifespan.
The firm says that system optimisations mean that many major apps will be able to take advantage of the refresh rate, although we doubt 120Hz will be the default setting. To account for video content that’s still produced at 24- or 30fps, OnePlus is looking to MEMC technology to insert additional frames, saying that it can be pushed to 60- or even 120fps with low power consumption, providing a “seamless, more fluid viewing experience for users.”

Other features of the 2020 Fluid Display include support for up to 1 billion shades of colour, a QHD+ resolution and 4096 levels of automatic brightness control.
