Samsung has announced the Galaxy S5 mini, HTC has launched the One mini 2 and now LG has confirmed the LG G3 S as a mid-range version of the G3.

"Smartphone manufacturers cannot ignore this growing segment of consumers who want the best balance of looks, features, performance and, of course, price," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and of LG Mobile. "The LG G3 Beat represents our commitment to the mid-tier smartphone market that demands mature technology, proven branding, great innovation and attractive price, all in a single device."

LG G3 S: Release date

The LG G3 Beat will be released first in South Korea on 18 July, with a global launch to follow. It will arrive in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries in 'the weeks that follow', said LG.

The LG G3 Beat will be available as the 'LG G3 s' in Europe and the CIS.

LG G3 S: Price

LG hasn't announced a price for the LG G3 Beat yet but has mentioned that it will be a 'class above other similarly priced mid-tier devices'. This suggests a mid-range price tag of around £350 matching device like the HTC One mini 2. LG has a knack for undercutting rivals so this could be another example of this.

As soon as we get a price from LG or retailers we'll let you know but expect it to be around the £350 mark.

MobileFun has announced that it will be selling the LG G3 S for £299. It's up for pre-order with no release date.

LG G3 S: Specs

Although it's smaller, the G3 Beat or G3 s looks very much like the full-size G3 with the floating arc design and buttons mounted on the back. It will be available in black, white and gold.

Possibly the reason why LG decided not to call the handset the LG G3 mini is because it has a 5in screen – the same size as the LG G2. It doesn't have the Quad HD resolution of its bigger brother and not even Full HD – that means it has just 720p HD on offer. It is an IPS class display though and has a high 74 percent screen to body ratio.

Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor (1.2 GHz Quad-Core) and 1GB of RAM. There's just 8GB of internal storage but the smartphone does feature a microSD card slot for adding more.

The rear camera is lower resolution than the G3 at 8Mp but retains the Laser Auto Focus. A 1.3Mp shooter can be found at the front. It has 4G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC but there's no sign of an IR blaster.

The G3 Beat runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and has some of the same software features of the flagship G3 such as the Smart Keyboard and Gesture Shot. Under the cover is a 2540mAh removable battery.
