But not only are these reservations first-come-first-serve, those who are successful are not even guaranteed a pre-order console, which Sony says are of “limited quantity”. Sony said the reservations will awarded based on “previous interests and PlayStation activities.”
If successful, each invitation will be open for a limited time, with successful applicants limited to the below quantities of hardware:
- 1 PS5 Console or 1 PS5 Digital Edition
- 2 DualSense wireless controllers
- 2 DualSense charging stations
- 2 Pulse 3D wireless headsets
- 2 Media remotes
- 2 HD Cameras
The system will no doubt disappoint many who can’t get a reservation, and then disappoint those who do but then are not successful in getting a console when they go up for pre-order. Sony knows that the PS5 will be phenomenally popular, so it is bound to be frustrating to some fans the company is opting to suggest there is a scarcity of consoles.
Then again, given the coronavirus pandemic, Sony may have no choice. If the pandemic has meant production of the consoles has been slow then it may have to resort to stalling tactics such as this reservation system in order to get some consoles sold while supply catches up with demand.
