Will there be a new Silent Hill game?
The news that Konami is reportedly reviving the Silent Hills series came from Twitter user Aesthetic Gamer, and while it’s easy to disregard rumours on a social network full of fake leaks, Aesthetic Gamer has been on the money with Capcom leaks in the past so it’s worth paying attention to.
According to the popular Twitterer, Konami “reached out” to developers around two years ago, inviting them to pitch ideas to breathe new life into the once hugely popular franchise. Konami allegedly settled on not one but two titles, with one thought to be a “soft reboot” of the franchise while the other looks to take on an episodic form similar to that of Until Dawn.
“In other news while I’m dropping this stuff, and I think I can talk about this, I’ll mention there is a couple new Silent Hill games in the works,” the tweeter said on the social network. “Konami about two years ago reached out to various developers to pitch ideas for two Silent Hill games” he continued to explain. “One a soft-reboot of the franchise, the other an episodic TellTale/Until Dawn-style game to go alongside the reboot”.
He admits that he doesn’t know much more than that, but does hazard a guess at the rough release plans for the upcoming titles. “This is just a guess, but I’d say there’s a high chance one or both of those titles may be revealed this year, but we’ll see”. We’ll see indeed, Ryan.
While it’s easy to disregard a rumour from a single source, even one with a decent track record, it’s harder to ignore when other sources claim the same thing. That’s exactly what happened with Horror specialist site Rely on Horror, with the website claiming to have heard reports that an upcoming Silent Hill project is in development from its “own independent source”.
We’re not done yet either; none other than Hideo Kojima himself is working on a new horror game, and Silent Hill 2 art director Masahiro Ito is now a core member of a horror project that he hopes “won’t be cancelled”. While the news that Kojima is working with Konami after the dramatic split a few years ago will come as a shock to many gamers, Eurogamer reports that “the ice has thawed between them” over the past couple of years.
But regardless of whether Kojima himself is at the helm of the project, it’s clear that something is going on, and Konami has since commented on the rumours and added more fuel to the fire.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Konami has confirmed that it’s looking into a continuation of the Silent Hill series, but the company isn’t giving much in the way of details. “We cannot share anything at this point, but we are listening to customer feedback and considering ways to provide the next title.”
So, a Silent Hill game is probably coming, but when?
Silent Hill 2020 release date rumours
While not based on information from anonymous sources, Aesthetic Gamer seems to think that at least one of the rumoured two Silent Hill titles will be revealed this year.
If there’s any truth to the speculation and the fact that Konami has been planning a comeback for the past couple of years, it’s possible that we’ll see the Silent Hills game(s) revealed at E3 2020, but until Konami officially reveals its plans for the show, we can only hazard a guess.
Silent Hill 2020 platform rumours
We don’t think current-gen consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 will miss out on the Silent Hill action, especially if it’s released within the next couple of years, and it’s possible that it could be available on the Nintendo Switch, although the latter will depend on the graphical grunt required to play the yet-unannounced game.
