The patent filing states the designer of the unknown device is Yusuhiro Ootori, a technical director at Sony. The V could be in reference to the Roman numeral V, which is the number five.
This could of course be a design that the company does not end up using. It is radically different from the sleek black slab PS4, and actually reminds us of the original Xbox which had a big X shaped design. The skant drawing has what looks like a disc slot, suggesting the fifth-gen PlayStation won’t completely abandon physical games in favour of downloads.
