When Sony took to the stage at E3, the company announced a new project – Dreams. Dreams is being developed by Media Molecule, the company behind other popular games including LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, and looks to follow in the footsteps of LBP with user-created content. Here’s everything we know so far about Dreams.

Dreams: Platforms and UK release date
So the big questions are “What platforms does it support and when can I buy it?” and while one of these questions is easy to answer, the other is a lot more difficult. Dreams is being developed by Media Molecule, the creators of LittleBigPlanet, and like the popular creation platform, Dreams will also be a PlayStation exclusive. It looks like Xbox and PC gamers will be missing out on this game!
Sadly there isn’t much in the way of a release date coined for Dreams, and it may not be with us for a while. During its announcement, Dreams was referred to as a “project” instead of a game, which to us indicates that it’s still in the early days of development. Also, judging by previous new IP announcements at E3, we won’t be expecting Dreams to be released in 2015.
Dreams: Story and gameplay
There wasn’t much given away by Sony during its E3 announcement regarding Dreams, but a video published to the PlayStation Blog days after the announcement may shed some more light. The video contains the same gameplay we saw at E3, with an interview with Media Molecule’s Creative Director Mark Healy and Technical Director Alex Evans, who provide more details about the game itself.
Alex Evans describes the upcoming title as “a space where you can go to explore and play Dreams of others, and then you get to create and share your own”. It sounds similar to the concept of LittleBigPlanet, which enables players to use their imaginations and create a variety of games to share with others around the world. “It’s one stop short of being able to put a sucker on someone’s head and it gets sucked out directly into the PS4” according to Mark Healy.
The possibilities seem to stretch much further than what was available with LittleBigPlanet, and it sounds like it’s easier to create than you’d imagine. “Within two seconds you feel like you’ve made something beautiful” according to Alex, which bodes well for those of us that don’t want to spend hours learning how to use the various game design tools provided.
The game will feature some developer-made Dreams initially to give gamers a taste of what’s possible, but from there Media Molecule wants you to put the pre-made creations to shame and create experiences that have never been thought of before. The community seems to be the most important factor of the game, and if the community continually creates new and exciting Dreams, the game will (in theory) always offer something new.
Alex and Mark finished the interview with a little teaser, saying, “Everything in Dreams is live” – but what could this mean? A multiplayer option where friends can experience a Dream at the same time?
