When does Snowpiercer start?

The first season of Snowpiercer starts on Sunday 17 May 2020 at 9pm ET on TNT for US viewers. For international viewers (including those in the UK), it will be available to stream on Netflix from Monday 25 May 2020.

What is Snowpiercer about?

Snowpiercer is an adaptation of the French comic book Le Transperceneige, a dystopian story about the survival of man after a climate engineering experiment went wrong and caused an ice age that killed most life on Earth.

What remains of society lives aboard the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the world. However, the carriages on the train represent different levels of class, which causes tension amongst passengers because of the differences of their living conditions.

This was the plot of the 2013 movie starring Chris Evans, but the TV show actually picks up seven years after these events, in which the class divides are still an issue and those aboard are still looking to rebel.

As this acts almost as a sequel to Bong Joon-ho’s film, you may want to watch the Snowpiercer movie first for some context. You can rent it now from Amazon UK and Amazon US.

Snowpiercer cast and crew

The two main stars of Snowpiercer are Jennifer Connelly (Alita: Battle Angel and A Beautiful Mind) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton and Blackish). Connelly stars as Melanie Cavill, known as ‘Voice of the Train’ who makes daily PA announcements to all carriages. Diggs meanwhile plays the part of Layton Well, a prisoner who is kept in the poor back end of the train.

Also in the cast is Rowan Blanchard (The Goldbergs) as Alexandra, a young wise girl with knowledge and connections to Snowpiercer.

Bong Joon-ho serves as executive producer on the series, but wasn't involved in any of the direction. The showrunner is Graeme Manson, taking over from Josh Friedman who stepped down after not having enough experience in the world of television according to Deadline. James Hawes (The Alienest) allegedly directed reshoots for the show, and also serves as co-executive producer.

How to watch Snowpiercer

If you’re in the US, you can watch Snowpiercer on TNT via your cable provider, and catch up via TNT online. UK and international viewers will be able to watch on Netflix, though these episodes are a week behind schedule.

If you want to watch at the same time as the US, this is difficult as the TNT site currently only allows you to sign in if you have a US cable account. If you have a friend’s account in America you can use, you may be able to sign in using their details and a VPN such as NordVPN.

Alternatively, Hulu does allow you to watch TNT as an add-on channel, and we have managed to find a way to watch Hulu outside of the US. However, we don’t know yet if it will be hosted here.
