It’s almost hard to believe, but It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now coming up on its 14th season, which will see the show tie with ‘50s sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet as the longest-running ever.
Here’s everything we know about season 14 so far, from the release date - both US and UK - to who the guest stars are, any trailers, and whether It’s Always Sunny will hit that record-making 15th season.
When does season 14 start?
FX has confirmed that It’s Always Sunny’s 14th season will air on its FXX channel beginning from Wednesday 25 September.
As usual for the last few years, we’re expecting 10 episodes to the season, airing once per week.
How to watch season 14 outside the US
The bad news is that if you’re like us in the UK, that release date doesn’t really apply. Despite its success, It’s Always Sunny still doesn’t have a day-and-date broadcaster in the UK. Netflix UK has all of the show’s previous seasons, but new material doesn’t hit the service for months after the US air date - we likely won’t see it on UK Netflix until some time in early 2020.
If you can’t wait that long, there are legal ways to watch it online, but it won’t be free. Since FXX is a cable channel it isn’t free-to-watch even in the US. If you’re based outside the US then you probably don’t have a US cable subscription, but luckily there are online alternatives.
If you subscribe to any of PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV or Hulu with Live TV you’ll be able to stream the show live or on catch-up for a few days after it airs, allowing you to legally keep up with the US air dates. None of those are free, but if you watch a lot of US TV they might be worth it, as they each give you access to loads of channels.
You won’t be able to just sign up from the UK or elsewhere though - you’ll need to both sign up and watch through a VPN, which masks your IP address, letting you appear to be in the US. There are loads out there - check out our streaming VPN ranking for a selection - but our current recommendation is NordVPN.
If you’re not sure what to do next, we have a dedicated guide to watching Hulu from the UK which will walk you through signing up to the service. Most of the same steps should apply for PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, or other similar services.
Watch the trailer
It took a while, but FX dropped a season 14 trailer right at the beginning of September, and it's a slickly cut look at what to expect this year: the zoo, laser tag, a noir episode, and a melon in a safe. Standard Sunny.
Season 14 guest stars
We do at least know a bit about the casting. All of the core five stars are back - Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenny, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and of course Danny DeVito - along the usual array of recurring characters.
The creators have also promised some big guest stars this year, with at least one jawdropper: ‘80s action star Dolph Lundgren will feature in one episode, playing Johnny Thundergun, in a callback to season 11's 'Thunder Gun Express' episode.
Has it been renewed for season 15?
So far, no. But don’t lose hope. FX chairman John Landgraf has said that “We will absolutely make more seasons” of the show, referencing a possible 15th or 16th, suggesting that the decision will ultimately come down to the core creative team - Howerton, McElhenny, and Day - as to whether they want to make more or not.
Let’s hope they do, and blow Ozzie and Harriet out of the water.
