Raspberry Pi B+ release date, price and specs

"We've often talked about our intention to do one more hardware revision to incorporate the numerous small improvements people have been asking for. This isn't a 'Raspberry Pi 2', but rather the final evolution of the original Raspberry Pi," said the firm in a blog post. See Best Raspberry Pi Starter Kits.

Raspberry Pi B+: Release date and price

Despite various upgrades (see specs below), the new Raspberry Pi B+ costs $35 (£25 in the UK) which is the same price as the model B.

The new B+ is available now from Raspberry Pi stockists - RS and Element 14 - and the model B will continue to be produced and on sale while there is demand.

Raspberry Pi B+: Specs

The new Raspberry Pi B+ board includes the same 512MB of RAM and Broadcom BCM2835 SoC as the model B. However, there are upgrades in other areas.

The Model B+ now comes packed with 40 pins on the GPIO (general-purpose input/output) header keeping the same pinout mapping for the first 26 pins as the model B. There are now two additional USB 2.0 ports meaning you don't need to use a USB hub for plugging in anything on top of a keyboard and mouse.

Instead of full-size SD cards, the B+ takes microSD cards and the new slot has a push-push feel to it meaning it should behave more like the SD and microSD slots on other devices.

Beyond port changes, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has been able to reduce power consumption on the B+, and the audio circuit now has its own "low-noise" power supply.
