Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Video-editing software specialist Cyberlink has launched an updated version of its flagship PowerDirector program. Upgrades to PowerDirector 8 will start at £39.99.

Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 adds upscaling to high-definition video resolutions and further ways to share clips to its arsenal of features.

Among the new functions are smoother slow-motion playback, support for animations within video clips, precision zooming in tools and additional templates including ones that allow free-floating objects to be manipulated and movements dictated without recourse to an action script.

Cyberlink says it has focused on improving ease of use while adding powerful editing options to enable consumers to create professional-looking video footage. At its simplest, the program can automatically assemble a combination of photos, music and transitions to create a photo slideshow, while more advanced creative efforts can be shared and critiqued, analysed and user-generated content shared at the dedicated portal.

Video-editing is a notoriously time-consuming and processor-intensive activity. However, Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 is the first consumer video-editing application that has been optimised for the Intel Core i7 processor and nVidia CUDA technology

CUDA makes use of today's multi-processor PCs to accelerate applications that were previously restricted to use on high-end machines. By using CUDA, Cyberlink says PowerDirector 8 is able to deliver faster video rendering and save on production time.

PowerDirector 8 can upload finished video directly to YouTube and Facebook or export clips for viewing on an iPod, iPhone or other portable playback device. Videos can also be saved as AVCHD, DVD or Blu-ray discs.

The video-editing program is available in the UK from today and costs £49.99 for CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Deluxe or £79.99 for CyberLink PowerDirector 8 Ultra.
