Toshiba Camileo SX900 Full HD camcorder Toshiba is adding two Full HD digital camcorders to its line-up of Camileo flash-based models. The Camileo SX500 and Camileo SX900 will go on sale in the UK in July and will cost around £200.

Toshiba has made great inroads into the digital camcorder market since it decided two years ago to start making flash memory-based devices. With a significant share of the Flash memory market (it makes memory for other manufacturers), it has been able to produce some good value camcorders that have hit the mark with consumers.

It's now set to launch two more 1080p high-definition Camileo models. The SX900 and SX500 will complement rather than replace the current X100 camcorder. The Camileo SX900 and SX500 have noticeably slimmer bodies than the X100 and Toshiba says it has worked on the camcorders' optics too. Low-light handling now sees the camcorders able to shoot in as little as 3 lux - that's less than twilight levels.

Video footage is captured at up to 1920x1080p resolution at 30 frames per second (60fps shooting is also possible but as interlaced video footage) and then stored to a removable media card. The camcorders can take up to 64GB SDHC media cards. The SX900 model has a 9x optical zoom while the SX500 has a 5x optical zoom. Both are supplemented by 12x digital zoom features.

Still photos can also be taken on the Toshiba Camileo camcorders. Composition is via the 2.7in tilt-adjustable 230K screen. Image stabilisation, nine-point autofocus, 12-subject face recognition and manual light adjustments are all included.

Toshiba has also added a colour chaser function. This makes it easier to follow the action as the focus locks on a subject and then travels with it based on its predominant colour - useful for fast cars and animals.
