Optoma HD20 digital projector Optoma has launched a high-definition digital projector with an unusually low price tag of £899.

The Full 1080p HD home cinema projector can be hooked up to a laptop or desktop PC, a standalone Blu-ray player, digital video recorder or set-top box, an Xbox 360 or other games console. Video footage and games are displayed in the 16:9 aspect ratio now common for commercial movies.

The 1080p Optoma HD20 is a DLP projector with a maximum brightness of 1700 Ansi lumens and a contrast ratio of 500:1. The unit comes with two HDMI (high-definition media interconnect) ports so that it can be simultaneously attached to a playback device such as a laptop and a games console or media streaming box, for example. It supports both PAL and NTSC video playback.

Optoma says the HD20 offers "whisper-quiet operation" to ensure movie or gaming enjoyment is not spoilt, while standby power consumption is less than 1 Watt. Heat from the Optoma's lamps is dispelled through fins ventilating its sides.

The projector has a muted silver fascia so it doesn't catch the eye; instead, all eyes will be on the image it projects at distances of 1.25 to 2.5m. The unit weighs a relatively modest 2.9kg and measures 324x234x9mm.

The Optoma HD20 digital projector goes onsale in the UK this month for £899. For full details see the Optoma website.
