Xiaomi is whetting our appetites for Tuesday's Mi Mix 2S launch with a range of teasers, with the latest pointing to Face Unlock. The phone will be announced in Shanghai at 2pm local time, so that's an early start for us in the UK. Fortunately, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. (Also see: How to watch Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Launch.)
It won't be a huge upgrade over the Mi Mix 2, but the 2S will see a performance improvement with the Snapdragon 845 onboard.
From hands-on videos it appears to use iPhone X-style gestures, and rumours had previously pointed to the idea that it would also have an iPhone X-style 'notch' - either central, a la iPhone, or in the top-right corner to house the previously bottom-sited selfie camera.
They're not true, though: as you'll see in the Mi Mix 2S press shots above (released by Xiaomi itself), the selfie camera is nowhere to be seen, and neither is a notch.
A screenshot revealing some more of the phone's specs include a 6.01in 18:9 full-HD+ display, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a 16Mp camera. Its predecessor has a 5.99in screen, so this sounds about right, while the battery will likely be unchanged at 3,400mAh.
Something we could see added to the Mi Mix 2S is wireless charging, given that Xiaomi has recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium.
Although Xiaomi phones typically run MIUI, the recent Mi A1 runs Android One. Of course, this is no operating system for a flagship, but there is talk of Android Oreo out of the box, which would mean western users wouldn't need to install Google services after purchase.
When is the Mi Mix 2S release date?
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S will be announced in Shanghai on Tuesday 27 March at 2pm, which is 6am for us here in the UK. It could be well worth getting out of bed early, though, since the Mi Mix 2S is tipped to launch alongside the Xiaomi Mi7.
How much will the Mi Mix 2S cost?
We don't expect to see a huge price increase over the Mi Mix 2, which had an RRP of 3299 RMB (64GB), 3599 RMB (128GB) or 3999 RMB (256GB). That makes it significantly cheaper than the flagships we're used to in the UK (straight conversions would be £367/US$521/423€ for the 64GB model, £401/$568/461€ for 128GB, and £446/$631/512€ for 256GB).
However, because you can't buy it directly from Xiaomi in the UK, you'll pay the higher prices of sites such as GearBest and Geekbuying in order to ship one over (and should also factor 20 percent import duty into your budget).
Right now, you can pick up the 64GB Global Mi Mix 2 from GearBest for £337.59/$459.99/375.67€.
