A launch event for the Xiaomi Mi 6X has been confirmed, with an announcement in Wuhan, China scheduled for Wednesday 25 April. It's home to the university at which CEO Lei Jun obtained his degree in Computer Science back in 1991.
Though UK users might be more excited about the Mi A2, which will likely arrive later this year as a Mi 6X running Android One, the Mi 6X announcement will serve as a sign of what's to come. You will be able to use it in the UK, too, provided you're happy to run the MIUI OS, ship it from a Chinese site such as GearBest, and live without 800MHz 4G LTE.
Much about the Mi 6X is already known, as you'll read below. And key specs have been confirmed by leaked retail packaging.
When is the Xiaomi Mi 6X release date?
Arriving three months earlier than anticipated, given the 25 July 2017 launch for the Mi 5X, the Mi 6X will be announced on Wednesday 25 April.
If it follows the same pattern, the Mi A1 that was announced on 5 September could see a 5 June launch for its successor, the Mi A2.
How much will the Xiaomi Mi 6X cost?
Both Mi A1 and Mi 5X have an RRP of 14,999 Rs, which is roughly £164/US$230. Expect Xiaomi to keep the pricing fairly constant, though you will need to factor in import duty (20 percent) if you plan to ship one of these devices from the likes of GearBest. Even so, you're looking at a circa-£200 smartphone.
Xiaomi Mi 6X specifications
Leaked retail packaging for the Mi 6X gives away several specs:
- Snapdragon 660 processor
- MIUI 9 (based on Oreo)
- 20Mp dual-camera
- 20Mp selfie camera
- 2910mAh battery
According to images released on the Mi forums, the Mi 6X will arrive in five colours: Cherry Pink, Flame Red, Sand Gold, Glacier Blue, and Black. It again has a dual-camera, a dual-20Mp 'Picture Perfect' model, but they are lined up in a vertical rather than horizontal array, with a fingerprint scanner also visible at the rear.
The selfie camera has also been the subject of leaks, with Xiaomi offering the below images as evidence of what the Mi 6X's front camera is capable of.
It should arrive with a notch-free 5.99in Full-HD+ (2160x1080) 18:9 display, the Snapdragon 660 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, dual-20Mp cameras and a 2,910mAh battery, looking a lot like the Redmi Note 5 Pro. A TENAA listing also gives away its 158.88x75.54x7.3mm chassis, which isn't that much larger than the 5.5in-screen, 155.4x75.8x7.3mm Mi 5X.
