BlackBerry has today announced a new smartphone which runs its own BlackBerry 10 operating system. Here's the BlackBerry Leap release date, price and specs.

The new phone, which is "all-touch" - i.e. no physical keyboard - is aimed at "career builders and companies who value security and privacy". It has a 5in 720p screen and a battery that BlackBerry says will give more than a full day's power, keeping users "hyper connected, productive and always in control".

The phone looks much like the Z10, reviewed, and even shares some of its specs, which we'll get to in a minute.

The Leap will cost $275, which might translate to around £180-190 when it arrives in the UK and that should include VAT, too.

BlackBerry Leap release date

The phone will launch globally in April, although there's no UK-specific launch date yet - it could be April, but might be a month or two later.

BlackBerry Leap specifications

As this isn't a flagship smartphone, it's no surprise that it doesn't have the specs you'd expect on a premium phone. The screen has a 1280x720 resolution which equates to 294ppi.

The processor and memory is the same as in the Z10, a Qualcomm MSM 8960 1.5 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM.

You get 16GB of storage and a microSD slot for adding up to 128GB more.

The Leap measures 144x73x9.5mm (a hair thicker than the Z10) and it weighs 170g.

Cameras - on paper - seem entirely reasonable with an 8Mp sensor at the rear capable of shooting 1080p video at 30fps. A fixed-focus 2Mp camera at the front supports 720p video.

A 2800mAh non-removable battery provides a claimed 25 hours of heavy use.

There's Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11n Wi-Fi, A-GPS and a built-in FM radio (not confirmed in the UK model).

Video output is via Miracast, and there's an accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor. There's also the usual multi-colour LED indicator, too.

Importantly, this is a 4G LTE phone, supporting the following bands in Europe:

  • FD-LTE: 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 (2100/1800/2600/900/800 MHz)
  • HSPA+ 1, 2, 5/6, 8 (2100/1900/850/900 MHz)
  • Dual Carrier 42 HSPA support
  • Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2, 3, 5, 8 (1900,1800,850,900 MHz)

Software-wise, you get the latest version of BlackBerry 10 (10.3.1), along with all the features BlackBerry users love including BBM as well as built-in malware protection and support for encryption.

Blend lets you get message notifications and read and respond to emails and BBM (or text messages) on your computer or tablet as well as the phone itself.

There's also BlackBerry Assistant, which allows you to manage email, contacts, calendar appointments and more by talking or typing (much like Siri and Cortana). When talking to Assistant via a Bluetooth headset, there's additional contextual spoken information, too.

A brand new addition is the Amazon App store, so you have access to this as well as BlackBerry's own store.
