Dell has launched a £269 miniature laptop designed to compete directly with Asus Eee PC. The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 weighs approximately 1kg and has an 8.9in screen.

Measuring 232x32x172mm, the glossy black Dell Mini 9 runs off a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and has 1GB RAM. Graphics on the Dell Mini 9 are handled by an integrated Intel GMA 950 chip and the 8.9in LCD display has a resolution of 1,024x600 pixels.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 comes preinstalled with either Windows XP or Linux Ubuntu 8.04.

In common with many mini laptops, the Dell has a 16GB SSD flash memory hard disk, rather than a traditional hard drive. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 1.3Mp webcam, a three-in-one card reader and three USB 2.0 ports complete the hardware line-up.

The Windows XP model is priced at £299 inc VAT and delivery and is available now. Dell says the Linux version will cost £269 inc VAT and delivery, will be available in a few weeks time.
