May was a month full of emotion - from crippling sadness to overwhelming joy - as Brooklyn Nine-Nine was dropped by Fox after five seasons, leading to a massive outcry from fans online. GIFs, Tweets, Facebook posts and petitions about the show were found in every nook and cranny of the internet until just over a day later, when NBC confirmed that it’d resurrect the show.

"Ever since we sold this show to Fox I've regretted letting it get away, and it's high time it came back to its rightful home," NBC Entertainment's Chairman Robert Greenblatt remarked. "Mike Schur, Dan Goor, and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we're all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and best cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy line-up."

Now that the cancellation isn’t going ahead, what can we expect from season 6 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Here’s everything you need to know, from the release date to plot details and the devastating news that a long-time character will be leaving the show in the new series.

When will Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 be released?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has historically kicked off every season in mid-to-late September, but sadly, that won’t be the case in 2018. In fact, NBC has confirmed that we’re going to have to wait until early 2019 to see the latest season of the show. Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy Santiago in the show, confirmed on Twitter that filming for the upcoming season began back in August.

While that’s the official stance on the release date, a recent livestream may have revealed the release window. It came from none other than Terry Crews via an Instagram livestream where the actor claims that “Brooklyn Nine-Nine is coming back in January on NBC”. You can see a fan rip of the livestream in the embedded tweet below.

This is something we’d expect more from Hitchcock and Scully, but then again, Terry did accidentally leak those arrest reports, didn’t he?

How many episodes will season 6 feature?

Despite being saved from cancellation by NBC, season 6 will have fewer episodes than those that came before it. While most seasons are 22 or 23 episodes long, NBC revealed that season six would feature only 13 episodes.

Thankfully, the network later decided to extend the episode list by five, bringing the total number of episodes up to a grand total of 18. It’s not quite 23, but we’ll take it!

The worry from fans was that the shortened run signified that season six may be the last series, and a way to wrap up each character’s storyline. This was fuelled by comments from Melissa Fumero, who after the renewal of the show wrote “Thank you to NBC for giving us the opportunity to finish this special show!!” on Instagram.

However, Andy Samberg seems to think differently. When quizzed on whether season 6 will be the end of the road for Jake and the squad, he replied “one hundred percent no,” though he did note that he was “trying to be confident”.

We’re fairly sure that after the outrage of the cancellation of the show in early 2018 shows just how invested people are in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and we think NBC will want to cash in on that interest for as long as possible.

Who is returning to Brooklyn Nine-Nine for season 6?

The good news is that the entire squad will be back for the beginning of series 6, but the bad news is that we’ll be losing a member of the team early on. Though she has confirmed that she’ll be in a handful of episodes, Chelsea Peretti, aka Gina Linetti, is exiting the show in series 6.

The actress took to Twitter with a suitably Gina-esque statement about her decision. She wrote: "I won't be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn't mean I won't ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji."

Aside from Gina, the whole gang should be back. That includes Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta), Stephanie Beatriz (Rosa Diaz), Terry Crews (Terry Jeffords), Melissa FUmero (Amy Santiago), Joe Lo Truglio (Charles Boyle), Andre Braugher (Raymond Holt), Dirk Blocker (Micheal Hitchcock) and Joel McKinnon Miller (Norm Scully).

What do we know about the season 6 plot so far?

It should come as no surprise that the events of season 6 are being kept under wraps until the series airs next year, but we have had some snippets of information over the past few months.

First up, Dan Goor has confirmed that season 6 will finally reveal whether Kelly is Scully’s wife, or his dog. We’re going with dog, but we’ll find out for sure soon enough!

Most importantly, Goor confirmed that following the almost-cancellation of the show after series 5, series 6 won’t end on a cliffhanger.

"We want to write a season finale that would be satisfying as a series finale and would also serve us well should we come back," he explained. "We've learned we'll never again do the kind of cliffhangers we did after seasons two, three and four because were we to be cancelled after those seasons, I think it would have been really disappointing for our fans."

There is also rumoured to be a special episode focused on Scully and Hitchcock, which we’re hoping will reveal more about the duo’s past in the NYPD.
