Samsung has added a 16in model to its 'touch of colour' range of notebook computers. The £799 ex VAT laptop is available as either an Intel Centrino or an Intel Core 2 Duo model and comes with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled.

Samsung's R610 is a 16:9 widescreen laptop that's geared up for entertainment. Packing a high-definition Blu-ray drive, it can show off HD video at a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels and supports 7.1 surround sound audio. However, this superior display is actually an optional extra: the standard configuration offers a resolution of 1,366x768 pixels.

The 16in widescreen display was first introduced by Acer earlier this year and offers optimal viewing of widescreen HD footage. The use of the true widescreen proportions means the whole viewable area can be used to display a high-definition movie with no need for black banding at the top or bottom.

Variants of the 2.8kg Samsung R610 laptop offer between 120GB and 320GB of hard disk space. Graphics are handled by an nVidia GeForce 9200M GS Go chip. The laptop has a pair of 2 Watt speakers and includes an HDMI output so it can be connected to a high-definition TV screen.

The standard specification features 1GB of 800MHz DDR RAM, but up to 4GB of RAM is supported. Samsung supplies 802.11a/b/g and n wireless connectivity and the R610 also has Bluetooth v2.

A 1.3Mp webcam is built into the Samsung R610's lid and there's a 3-in-1 card reader and 4 USB 2.0 ports.

The Samsung R610 goes onsale in the UK from October with a starting price of £799 excluding VAT.
