It’s possible that over time you may have created more than one Google account. Maybe one was for work and another for home, or it could be the case that you just didn’t like the name you had chosen first time around. So, is it possible to merge both of them into a single unified account? We take a look at what you can do to combine Google accounts.
How to use two Google accounts on one device
If you don’t want to fiddle about with all the individual methods outlined below, a much easier solution is to simply add both Google accounts to the same device.
For instructions on how to set this up, read how to change a Google account on Android.
Can I merge my Google accounts?
The short answer is no. At the time of writing Google provides no way to combine two or more accounts into one, which is frustrating. That being said, there are some workarounds that may allow you to mix some of the pieces of your disparate Google IDs, plus there’s the easier option of having multiple accounts on your smartphone, tablet or PC.
Google does offer something it calls a Takeout feature, which creates an archive of the data from your account.
While this sounds like it would be the simplest solution, for some reason the company provides no way for this data to be imported into a new account. So, in many ways, it’s pretty useless. Therefore, the only route open to you is to manually move data from some of the individual services such as Contacts, Mail, Maps and Photos.
How to merge Google Contacts
If you have contacts that you want to move from one account to another, it’s possible to create a backup of them, which can then be imported into Google Contacts. To see how to do the former, read our guide on how to backup contacts on Android.
With the .vcf created following the instructions laid out in that tutorial, go to the Contacts app on your phone and tap the three lines in the top left corner and navigate to Settings > Import. You’ll be asked where you want to import from (.vcf file or SIM card), so choose .vcf file tap OK, then find the file on your device and select it to import the data.
How to transfer email from one Google account to another
Email is an important part of life, so you don’t want to leave messages stranded in an old account that you don’t use anymore. Thankfully, you can import your inbox to your primary Google account. To do so, take a look at our tutorial on how to change your Gmail address.
How to transfer Map history or SMS from one Google account to another
Sadly, there’s no way to transfer your Map data and history or SMS messages from one Google account to another at the moment. You may find some apps in the Google Play Store that offer some kind of import/export options, but in the past Google has quickly moved to break the paths used by these types of apps, so it’s hard to recommend any with certainty.
How to transfer Google Photos to a new Google account
It’s relatively easy to move your Photos from one Google account to another, as all you need to do is share the library. To do this, open the Google Photo app then tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
Then navigate to Photos Settings > Partner Sharing > Get started and follow the instructions for adding the new Gmail address. When you’re finished, tap Send Invitation.
Now, log into the other Google account you want to use, open the Google Photos app, tap on the speech bubble icon in the top left corner, then tap Accept on the invitation you’ve received. Now, you should have all the photos on your new account.
How to move Google Drive files to a new account
Again, there’s no automated way to do this between Google accounts. You can share folders, like on the Photos app, but it can get a little complicated and remains an imperfect solution. Probably the best, but most time consuming, is to download all the files and folders you want, then upload them directly into the new account.
Of course, if your Drive is bursting as the seams, then this can be a daunting task. But, if you follow our how to clear out Google Drive and free up space for new files tutorial, then you may end up saving money on the amount of storage you need, not to mention getting some order back into your file system.
Don’t forget that you can always take the route of moving the folders to a different online storage location, so take a look at our guide to the best cloud storage services to see what’s on offer.
