There's nothing worse than uploading your digital snaps to your PC, only to discover that in that perfect photo, you or one of your subjects has red-eye. Many modern cameras have red-eye reducing technology, but if your device doesn't benefit from the function, don't panic. It's relatively easy to remove red-eye from a digital snap using photo editing software, such as Photoshop, which also offers plenty of other creative effects and edit.

However, before you splash the cash on expensive software, it's worth noting there's a number of free photo editors available that offer the same features and functions but without the price tag. Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011, which is part of Microsoft's Windows Live suite of free tools, is one such offering. It lets you organise, manage and make basic edits to digital photos, such as removing red eye, as well as creative tools to help ensure the final result is the 'perfect' shot. Here's how to remove red eye using the software.

Step one
Start by downloading Windows Live Photo Gallery from Microsoft's dedicated Windows Live site. You'll need to register for a free Windows Live ID if you don't already have one. Log into your account, then follow the prompts to install Photo Gallery. You can choose to download the entire suite or just Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Step two
Photo Gallery will trawl your hard drive for photographs, then display them in a similar fashion to Windows Explorer. From here, double click on the image you want to change the colour off, to display is full screen in the editing area.

Step three
Select the Red Eye tool from the top of the window and then using the cursor draw a box around the area you want to fix. Then software will then automatically remove the red colour from the eye. If you need to zoom in on the image, use the slider located to the bottom right-hand side of the window. If you make a mistake, press 'Revert to the original' from the top of the window to erase your change. Press Close file when finished and your change will be automatically saved.
