OnePlus is a company that has long been a favourite of ours, as its phones combine excellent features with affordable prices. The new OnePlus 7 is no exception, bringing top-tier specs and design to the table and still managing to cost around half the price of most modern flagships.
While both have an impressive array of premium processors, RAM, and other accoutrements, one feature missing on both is wireless charging. Not to worry though, as it’s actually possible to sort this with just a couple of accessories you’ll find online.
Can I add Qi wireless charging to the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro?
Yes. While it might seem like you’d need to hack open the case, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a far simpler way to achieve wireless charging. What’s required is an external receiver. These slim pads stick to the back of the phone and plug into its power socket. Then, when you place the phoen on a Qi charging pad the receiver will route the power through the cable into the phone’s battery.
It’s similar to a battery case, but without the bulk and of course with the ability to use wireless charging. Receivers are quite cheap: you can get the Nillkin Type C wireless charging receiver for £10.99 from Amazon UK and $12.99 on Amazon US.
This is one of the best options in our opinion, as it not only has a wide range of positive reviews from customers, but also comes with the all-important USB type-C connector that’s compatible with the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. It should be noted that this won’t deliver the Warp or Dash charging speeds OnePlus are famed for but you’ll still be able to recharge your handset at the standard wireless rate.
To accompany the receiver, you’ll need a Qi charging pad. Again, these are widely available and include the Limxems 10W Fast Wireless Charger for £12.99. For alternatives, see our roundup of the best wireless chargers.
US customers should check out the Anker 10W Qi-certified wireless charging pad that retails for $13.99 and has over 1,300 reviews with an average rating of 4 stars.
With those two elements in place, you’re ready to go.
All you need to do now is stick the receiver to the back of your phone or to the case that you intend to use. The one important factor is that you place the receiver in a position where you can easily plug its power connector into the charging port on the phone.
Connect the Qi charging pad to a power supply and then simply pop the phone on top, keeping the side with the receiver closest to the pad. That’s it. You should now have wireless charging capabilities on your OnePlus 7 or 7 Pro, and all for less than £30/$30.
