Video calling is no longer a new feature on WhatsApp, but what about if you want to video call multiple WhatsApp contacts at once? We'll explain how to make single and group video calls on WhatsApp.
How to video call on WhatsApp
- Open a WhatsApp conversation
- Tap the video camera at the top right of the window
- Tap 'Call' when prompted to start video call
- If you would rather make a voice call tap the telephone icon rather than the video camera
How to make group video calls on WhatsApp
When we originally wrote this tutorial we focused on Booyah, a free app for Android and iPhone that lets you make group video calls on WhatsApp with up to 12 people, provided they are all running the app. It sounded great, and it was mostly great in our tests.
But since then Booyah has been pulled from both Google Play and the Apple App Store, which makes us cautious. If you are going to go ahead and download it anyway then we'd recommend you also install an antivirus app.
While it's easy to sideload Booyah on Android, the same is not true for iPhone. Since you'll likely have iPhone owners in your group chat, Booyah is no longer as useful as it once was.
If you do want to go ahead anyway, run a Google search for 'Booyah APK', find a reputable app repository to download it from, then follow the prompts to enable the installation of apps from unknown sources and install the app.
Fortunately, we may not have much longer to wait for group video chat to become an official feature within WhatsApp. In a blog post made back in October 2017, some WhatsApp screenshots (shown below) clearly show the video chat camera icon within a group chat. We guess that either means it is in testing, or that someone went out of their way to Photoshop a screenshot for no reason.

The app couldn’t be any simpler to use, simply install it either on Android or iOS and the app will then have access to your WhatsApp contacts. In terms of permissions on Android, the app will require you to access your photos/media/files, camera, microphone, Wi-Fi and have full network access.
Once the app is installed, you’ll be able to directly video call any of your WhatsApp contacts through the app. In order to be able to make a video call, the recipient(s) will need to also download and install Booyah and of course have WhatsApp installed on their device. As you initiate a call it will provide you with a link to a video chat, whereby contacts can join. If you happen to close the application whilst the call is taking place, your video will freeze, but you’ll still be connected to your video call via voice call only.
As well as allowing you to make video calls on WhatsApp with single contacts, Booyah lets you hold group video calls with several of your friends. You’ll be able to directly add extra people within the conversation.
We experienced a few problems with the app, where at times it didn't properly display all the contacts, but on the whole the app is very simple and works as intended.
