We’ve all made regrettable game purchases in the past, but what about if it was a genuine mistake? While it’s a relatively trivial process returning physical goods to the retailer that you purchased it from, not many are aware of how to apply for refunds on digital content purchased via Sony’s PlayStation Store.
The good news is that it is possible to get a refund from the PlayStation Store, but there are restrictions in place. Here, we break down Sony’s PlayStation Store refund policy and explain all you need to know about getting a refund on PS4 games, DLC, pre-orders and subscriptions.

Getting a refund from the PlayStation Store
So, you want to get a refund on a purchase from the PlayStation Store. Thankfully, the process is a little easier than getting a refund on Switch games, although there are limitations in place to stop abuse of Sony’s refund system.
We break it down in more detail below, but worth noting that with any kind of refund, the cash will be transferred to your PSN Wallet and not the original bank account that was used to pay for the content.
Games & DLC
If you want to get a refund on games, DLC, themes, avatars and season passes, the good news is that you have 14 days to apply for a refund. The catch? You’re not eligible for a refund if you’ve started to download or stream the content unless the content is faulty in some way (i.e. buggy and unplayable).
If you are eligible for a refund on accidentally-purchased games, DLC, themes, avatars and season passes, simply fill out the refund request form on the Sony website.
What about games that haven’t been released yet? You can get a refund on pre-ordered content, but the conditions vary depending on when you pre-ordered.
If you pre-ordered the content more than 14 days prior to release then you can request a refund at any point until release, no questions asked. For those that pre-ordered fewer than 14 days prior to release, you can request a refund up to 14 days after the date of purchase.
The same rules as above apply here too; if you’ve pre-downloaded the content, chances are your refund won’t be honoured by Sony.

Subscription refunds are a little more complicated than other types of refund on the PlayStation Store. The good news is that you can apply for a refund within 14 days of purchase, but the amount that you’ll be refunded will depend on how much you’ve used the service.
In the case of PlayStation Plus, the amount of the refund will be reduced if you’ve used the service to play online, download monthly games, use cloud storage, etc. It’s also worth noting that free trials are included in the 14-day period, so don’t assume that you’ve got 14 days once the trial runs out.
