The 70th annual Emmy Awards are fast approaching, and there’ll be plenty of interest on both sides of the Atlantic in watching America’s biggest TV awards show.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2018 Emmys, including when it’s happening, who’s been nominated, and how to watch it live from anywhere in the world.

When is the 2018 Emmy Awards show?

The 2018 Emmys will take place tonight, Monday 17 September, and the ceremony will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with things kicking off at around 5pm local time - so that’s 8pm on the east coast, and 1am Tuesday morning here in the UK.

How to watch the Emmys on TV

If you’re in the US, watching along live is pretty easy: just tune into NBC from 5pm PT or 8pm ET.

How to stream the Emmys online

If you’d rather watch from your phone, tablet, or computer, that’s pretty easy too - you’ve just got to head to NBC’s website where you can stream the channel live online from a whole range of devices.

You can also get the NBC app on iOS and Android, as well as Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Xbox, and Samsung TV, or access live NBC through other services including Hulu with Live TV, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV.

How to watch from the UK

If you’re in the UK, things are ever so slightly trickier. The awards ceremony won’t be broadcast on UK TV, and the NBC website won’t let you stream the channel from a UK IP address, so you’ll need a VPN if you want to follow along live - which as a reminder, means from 1am Tuesday morning.

A VPN lets you use the internet while masking your true location information, meaning that you can trick the NBC website into thinking you’re browsing from the US.

There are free VPNs, but they’re usually slow and unreliable - not ideal for live streaming TV. Instead we’d recommend you pay for one, or at least use the free trial of a paid VPN. Our top recommendation is NordVPN, but check out our guide to the best VPNs for streaming if you want to see some of the other great alternatives.

Once you’ve chosen a VPN, just install it and turn it on, making sure to choose a server based in the US. Then either open up your web browser and head to NBC’s website, which should now let you stream the Emmys live, or access your choice of the NBC app or other US services including Hulu with Live TV, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and YouTube TV.

Who is hosting?

The hosts for this year’s show are Saturday Night Live stars Michael Che and Colin Jost, and it sounds like you can expect appearances from a few other big comedians along the way.

"NBC is thrilled to be the home of this year's Emmy Awards and with Colin and Michael in the driver's seat as hosts, along with surprise appearances by other cast members of Saturday Night Live, I think we are in for one of the funniest awards shows in a long time," NBC's Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement.

Jost and Che added: "We're proud to be the first duo hosting the Emmys since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce and somehow that's a real fact."

What are the nominations?

Surprising absolutely no-one, Game of Thrones led the nominations this year with 22 nods, closely followed by Saturday Night Live and fellow HBO show Westworld, each with. After those three are The Handmaid’s Tale with 20, and American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace with 18.

A little more surprising is that for the first time in forever HBO didn’t lead nominations overall. Despite picking up 108 nominations it was ever so slightly beaten by Netflix’s 112, just the latest sign of how much the streaming service is shaking up the TV industry.

We’ve gathered up the main nominees right here, so read through to find out which of your favourites made the cut, and which were unfairly snubbed.
