Use the HBO Max app to download shows and movies
The simplest and easiest way to watch films and TV shows from HBO Max offline is to do it via the HBO Max app, which you can get on mobile devices and tablets (find out how to get HBO Max on your device here).
Here’s the steps you need to take to download content:
- Open the HBO Max app on your phone or tablet and sign in
- Make sure you’re connected to WiFi
- Choose the episode or film that you want to download, most are available on HBO Max but those that aren’t won’t have the ‘download’ button option
- Tap ‘download’, the download percentage will let you know the progress and you can pause this at any time
- To cancel the download, tap the 'X' button
You can find all your downloads in the ‘My Downloads’ section of the app, under your profile. Your account can have a total of 30 downloads across all profiles and devices. If you run out of space, you’ll need to delete some of your downloads off of one of your devices. To see which mobile devices are signed into your account, go to your profile and choose ‘Manage Devices’.
If you don’t watch a download within 30 days of downloading, or within 48 hours of when you first start watching, then the download will automatically be deleted from your device. However, you can always re-download it.
You’ll see everything your account has downloaded, regardless of what profile is signed in. Rest assured though that kids profiles will be locked from viewing any content that is restricted by parental controls. Your account can have up to five copies of the same episode or movie across all profiles and devices.
Downloads are locked to WiFi and automatically download with the highest possible quality. If your internet is running slow, you can sacrifice quality for speed by clicking on your settings in the profile section. Tap ‘Video Settings’ and select ‘Fastest download’ to use this option.
If you need to download over a cellular network, then you can also unlock this option in ‘Video Settings’ under your settings in the profile. You can also opt to set up an automatic warning for yourself that this will use up a lot of data, in case you need a reminder in the future.
How to watch HBO Max offline on your TV
Unfortunately, downloads are not available in the HBO Max TV app. However, you can connect your mobile device with downloads on your TV. For phones or tablets, you can use Google Chromecast, Apple AirPlay or other screen mirroring options to link up your screens and play the downloaded files.
If your downloads are on your laptop or PC, then all you need is a HDMI cable to connect it to your TV. This also doesn't require the internet, if you've already got what you need downloaded. We have further advice in our guide to streaming from your PC to your TV.
How to watch offline on your computer or laptop
Downloading content from HBO Max onto your PC or laptop unfortunately isn’t possible via the web browser like it is with the app. However, you can look into purchasing some third-party screen recording software.
This type of product will allow you to record content from the likes of Disney Plus, Amazon Prime and Netflix and store your recordings on your PC. Different programmes will have different capabilities - it's worth comparing a few, especially the free and paid versions. Some of the software also converts the recorded video files into your preferred format for playback, such as MP4 or WMV.
There’s a couple of options available. Audials Movies costs £20 with a discount on, whilst Bandicam offers both free and paid versions (the paid allows use on multiple devices). Flashback is another similar tool with more advanced features in the paid version. If you're still unsure, you can check out our roundup of the best screen recorders.
We must stress that these recordings should only be played in your home, on your own PC, and not be shared with anyone else or on any other device. It’s also worth mentioning that this is against HBO's terms of service, and they may reserve the right to block your account, so proceed at your own risk.
Finally, if you have a Chromebook, you may be able to get the HBO Max Android app and download content via the first method.
