Windows spends hours "Checking for updates"

Windows spends hours "Checking for updates", but never finds any.

I noticed a few days ago that I couldn't download/install any Windows updates. I spent a lot of time trying various remedies until, at last, I decided to reinstall Windows from scratch. Unfortunately, this still hasn't solved the problem! I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

Can anyone help? I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Latitude D630.

That must be incredibly annoying KeithMH.

I am still running W7 on one machine just because I am interested in the strange and fascinating tactics that Microsoft are deploying. But anything important is done in Windows 10, which has "settled down" in the past few months, and is now running flawlessly.....even on a 10 year old desktop originally shipped with XP.

Is it some particular software that is stopping you from jumping ship?

Google for Windows update fix - Open the top item. I selected "Fix it for me" and it fixed two items, windows update and background intelligent transfer service. I then selected Shutdown as it showed "Updates available" - two and half hours later I went to bed. This morning it took the computer half an hour to complete the update process!!
