Windows 7 and IE 8

My son recently bought a new system using Windows 7 and IE 8. He says IE 8 issues the message 'cannot connect to this web site' for some web sites that he has used previously with Windows 98. He is running Norton 360.Is this likely to be a problem of the software, set up,or the web sites he is trying to connect to?

It's likely to be Norton blocking them.

or might need to opt for compatability mode if the webs are ie8 friendly

W7, IE8 and Norton call all block some web sites in a way that W98 never would

In particular IE8 has much more blocking ability according to the settings

Run the Network Diagnostics tool in Internet Explorer
To do this, follow these steps:
1.Start Internet Explorer, and then try to access the Web page that is displaying the error message.
2.On the page that displays an Internet Explorer error message, click the Diagnose Connection Problems link. The Network Diagnostics tool will run. When the tool has finished running, it will report one of the following results:
oIt was unable to find a problem.
oIt has detected a problem. Additionally, the tool will provide guidance about the next steps to take to troubleshoot the problem.
Note Internet Explorer 6 users click Detect Network Settings
3.Click IP Address, and note the IP Address. You may need it for future troubleshooting.
4.Follow the steps in the Network Diagnostics tool to fix any connection problems.
5.Start Internet Explorer.

Thanks everybody. Turned out to be Norton settings as you suggested.
