Win 10 fails to link but dragging link toaddress b

Hi

Using Windows 10, build 14393.1066 and using 3 browsers Fx, Edge and Chrome will not open links intermittently, possibly 1 forth of the time. An empty browser window appears with an empty address slot.

However, selecting the link “Click Here” (for example), and dragging the words "Click Here" or even an entire TITLE link up to the address bar opens the site as it should. The fact that this occurs with 3 browsers suggests a Windows problem, not a browser problem. I did uninstall "Classic Shell", Winaero Tweaker, Adobe Flash and Reader without effect.

Any advice on stopping this behavior will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

right click start - command prompt (admin)

type sfc /scannow

press enter

see if windows finds and replaces any corrupt or missing system files.

retry to link after its finished.

Try above but usually rebooting Windows 10 resolves these niggly problems. If you have fast boot enabled then a shutdown will remember these errors. Try a reboot (Windows calls it a restart) rather than a shut down.

Should have added check default apps in All Settings and click on the reset tab. Reboot.

Fruit Bat sfc not help. Thank you.

The computer has rebooted and shutdown several times. Fast boot not enabled.

I cannot find “All Settings” only Settings. Default programs has 4 options without reset tab.

I see “Reset this PC” under Recovery in “Update and security”. As I remember this is not much different than clean install from the Microsoft disks and causes several of my programs to require activation and previous experience teaches me to avoid this if all possible.

Possibly of interest, I am now running an image by Acronis that I created prior to my becoming aware of this phenomenon. Since it is an intermittent problem of course I could be wrong. Anyway this did not help.

BTW Right click > open in new window which works.

I very much appreciate your advice. Thank you.

I installed this version 3 days ago in my problem is only occurred once.

2017-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4016871)

I’m guessing that means it’s fixed.

I appreciate the advice. Thank you. Mark solved.
