Two files not where they should be

Both been there for some weeks now. In the root of "C" there is a file named msdia80.dll. Obviously should not be there. I had this issue about a year ago and followed the advice from Microsoft with disastrous results. (removed all user permissions and locked me out of changing anything). Had to wipe and reinstall. So I'm not doing that again. The advice was to install a service pack to C++2005. Obviously now very nervpus of messing with this. The only other method I can think of is to copy it to where it should be and use regsvr32, Is there any risk in doing this? Also in the root of one of my external drives is a file named gdiplus.dll. That shouldn't be there either. But nothing so far seems to mind when the external drive isn't connected. Grateful for any help

Re msdia80.dll - Have you read the latest (September 2018) from Microsoft? They may have got it right this time? See click here .

Thanks but that's what I did last time. If there's no safe fix I'll just leave it where it is. Not doing any harm.

you should never move or delete any op sys files just because they are put where you don't want them , this also applies to putting all files in a folder to make your drive contents look neater , don't do it.

You may also find windows duplicates files and folders it does this for a reason. If you use a program to get rid of duplicated files and folders all sorts of bad stuff will happen and sys restore wont help you
