Hi it's been a while. My daughter has a windows 10 hp laptop with a small HDD,I have a spare 500gig drive but he drive hasn't got enough space to install acronis on it. Is there anyway I can make an I.age of her drive without installing the software on the small drive in the laptop?

Do you have to install this on the drive being cloned? If so that's where the problem is there's very little room on it?

Can you remove the latop drive and connect to your own machine?

make an image of the drive - connect the new drive and restore the image to the new drive put new drive in laptop and see if it will boot.

I'm unfamiliar with Acronis but I'm sure it will be similar as with Macrium. If you connect the destination drive via USB and connect the rescue media (I'm using a USB flash drive) then boot up to the rescue media you should be able to clone outside of Windows. Example of Macrium set-up below.

For this case, the optimal solution would be to use the NTFS Recovery program. Its functionality allows you to solve your problem.

It has onboard SSD that cant be changed so took hard drive out of her other laptop that was playing pug it in a caddy and connected to my laptop which immediately detected problems on the drive and asked if it wanted fixing. Let it sort it put it back in the laptop all sorted and that is a 500gig drive.

Acronis allows you to make Rescue Media from the Tools option using Rescue Media Builder and boot the computer from the Rescue Media DVD or USB Flash Drive and Clone or Image without the need to install it to the hard drive.
