Running a secondary hard drive (old computer)

I bought a new computer because my previous one broke. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the hard drive in my computer, that's non-removable, to access the data I have on the old computers hard drive (chd). I have an external hard drive set up that works with my computer and it seems to be responding (light turns on) when the chd is connected, but I can't access it. Ive tried both turning the computer on with it connected and connecting when turned on.

Is it possible, or is all my stuff kaput?

Have you put the old drive into an external case?

If so when you connect it to your new PC does it show in Computer (Explorer)? or in Disk management?
