PC won't work without internet connection

Unless my PC, which runs Vista, has an internet connection (a BT line which occasionally fails), when opened normally it fails to respond to most commands: Word documents won't open, everything else is sluggish to the point of eventually freezing the entire PC. However, in "Safe" mode, everything - at least the things that operate in safe mode including Word - do work. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

Check your startup items something obviously is trying to connect and is using a lot of resources to do so.

Try turning off "Automatic updates"

If you can, when you boot normally, run Task manager and look under Processes for Trusted Installer - this is Windows trying to check for, download and install updates.

Thanks, sounds like good advice.
